Yale, Elihu (1649-1721).
English colonial administrator. Born on April 5, 1649,
in Boston, Mass. While he was on duty in Madras, India, in 1687, he became president and
governor of Fort Saint George. After he was superseded in 1692 he went to England and
eventually became high sheriff of Denbighshire in 1704. In 1714 he sent gifts of books
to the Collegiate School at Saybrook, Conn. He donated more books and goods in 1718,
prompting the school to change its name to Yale College.
